IT'S NOT COOL
Its cool to believe in something positive and to be comitted and to build on the talent that yr born with. if you get sidetracked with all or any of the above then good luck with yr meaningless + repetitive existence, everyone makes mistakes but the people who continue making the same ones are the ones who will never be satisfied. i guess sometimes its hard to stay focused but at least TRY to remember all you've already got, make the most of it, learn, do yr research, and never give up on what you know is right. Most importantly, DON'T BELIEVE THE FUCKING HYPE.
I know right? Like since when did I become Mother bloody Theresa...These arn't words that I can honestly say i live my day to day life by, but they are the ones that i aspire to keep with me til i die + that i aim to push to the forefront in hope of change and a better way of life.

CARAVAGGIO
Besides his painting, most sources i've read depicting his personal life describe him as being a bit of a rascal to put it mildly aha. Lots of ‘brawls’ which has now become one of my favorite words, it’s like polite way of saying punch up.
Judith Slaying Holofernes..the swine! |
So in a NUTSHELL..
At 19 started his venture to Rome after apprenticing, on his way over he attacked a policeman but got away with it.
Shortly after arriving, news of his rebellious methods of painting came about.
At this time in Italy, artists were expected to follow lengthy preparation methods before beginning each piece, obviously this was all a load of bollocks to him. ‘Bun that, this is taking fuckin’ forever..’ Fortunately for him he made a big success for himself, in Rome, fame and fortune followed.. Buuuut then things got messy when he was brought to trial at least 11 times for mostly violent offences, and then there was talk of murder so and he had to run away again, sharpish.
Made a load of threats, in particular to some guy named Josepin [Cross between ‘Joseph’ and ‘Josephine, blatantly someone’s idea of a bad joke , To Josephin’s parents...great call giving yr son the name of a royal tranny.. JEH-HOE-ZE-PIN ZEE QUEEN DAH-ARLING”]. Turned out this Josepin was a bit of a pussy anyway, refusing to fight because ‘I am*[eth] of noble blood and he [Carravag] be not*[eth]..I also do declare*[th] that I talk*[eth] through the lips of my puckered arse- hewl.' *added for effect duhhhh
Then he DID actually kill some poor sod after a brawl broke out over a game of tennis. Went to Naples, then Malta, was made a Knight, got into another tiff with a senior knight, this time I reckon it was over sword size..[hardy harrr] and off he ran once more. More trouble with archrival Josepin. Was ruthlessly pursued by this old git and his mates and after all the running around he caught a fever and died alone at 39 at Porto Ercole.
So, in conclusion, gained immense artistic success and personal struggle and misery during his lifetime, was famous but somehow still always poor, no friends.. and hardly ever had a workshop cos of all the running about and such.
Crazy violent but devoutly religious [both which are evident in his work]...
Old Vag was repeatedly scorned for his 'naturalist' work. Basically it looked TOO REAL..[what a stupid reason to hate something..'Nah i don't like it, paint it again but this time much more fake!'].people were freaked out because in the work of all his predecessors they were concerned with everyone looking all romantic and Classical like something out of a fairytale [gag] the bodies were all long and spindly and drowned in their religious robes and the heads were made to look like they were in pea sized proportion because of this, or [and ive seen a ridiculous amount of this] in a painting with like, 20 different saints and apostles in it, they all h have exactly the same face but just different hairstyles because life painting was frowned upon so they could only re-design the same or similar versions of the paintings that came before then, unfortunatley making a lot of the art of this style seem, to me, bland and generic, no matter how heightened the painters skill was, if he didn't bring some expression or vigour to his work I wouldn't be a fan, but obviously thats just my own opinion, I only mention this to exemplify the extreme contrast between Caravaggio work and the popular art of the era.
A bunch of his first large scale paintings were automatically rejected by snot nosed patrons who for some unknown reason seemed to the dictate rules of 'good artistic taste' even though i'm sure the majority of them would probably think that an easel was a bit of broken scaffolding if they saw it- on the grounds of 'indecorum and theological incorrectness' whatever that means...
Its clear from just looking at a lot of his work that he aimed to depict truth, drama and realism. He was beyond advanced at foreshortening techniques and practically invented Chiascuro. Some of these paintings make me feel like i'm standing at the scene, in the scene almost, rather than just looking at a picture and to me that makes it more than just art.
